OpenStack Horizon

OpenStack Horizon is a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) for managing OpenStack compute, storage and networking services.

Administrators can use Horizon to launch virtual machine instances, view the size and current state of their OpenStack cloud deployment, manage networks, and set limits on the cloud resources available to users. Authorized users can use Horizon as a self-service portal to provision cloud resources.

OpenStack Horizon offers three different management dashboards: a User Dashboard, a System Dashboard and a Settings Dashboard. Administrators are allowed to customize certain visual elements of the GUI, including branding and navigation.

It is important to note that OpenStack Horizon is an optional application because developers can also choose to build their own user interface. Developers are also able to provide administrators with more functionality by integrating Horizon dashboards with third-party management and monitoring tools.

OpenStack Horizon requirements

In order to install OpenStack Horizon, the basic system requirements include:

  • Python 2.7
  • Django 1.7 or 1.8
  • Nova
  • Keystone
  • Glance
  • Neutron (unless Nova-network is used)

Horizon is supported by the latest version of Firefox, the latest version of Chrome and Internet Explorer 9 and up.

Quote of the Day

"Out of the 30+ modules accepted for the OpenStack project list, only four -- Nova for compute, Glance for image management, Neutron for networking and the Horizon dashboard module -- bear direct comparison to VMware." -
Jim O'Reilly
