value stream map

Value stream maps are a lean manufacturing visualization tool that document all of the repeatable steps required to bring a product to market and identify wasted effort.

Value stream maps have two important purposes:

  • Identify processes that do not provide value.
  • Help stakeholders visualize ways processes that do not bring value can be changed or eliminated.

Value stream maps have their roots in the Toyota lean production system. In the context of manufacturing, value can be thought of as anything the customer is willing to pay for. Any process that does not provide value is called waste.

In software development, value stream mapping supports the concept of continuous improvement. When used in DevOps, the goal of value stream mapping is to reveal steps in software development and operations that waste time and change steps that are needlessly complicated.

Like process and workflow maps, value stream maps are typically created as one-page flow charts that depict the various steps involved in moving a product, project, or service from start to finish. Continue reading about value stream maps...

Today's Takeaway

"In many cases, management provides the budget for the value stream mapping exercise, but does not get behind the implementation of the required changes...One big challenge lies in breaking down silos between business units." - Andrey Mihailenko
