Microsoft Hyper-V Manager

Hyper-V Manager is a free administrative tool from Microsoft for creating, changing and deleting virtual machines (VMs). Hyper-V Manager first became available in Windows Server 2008 and is available on any Windows OS with Hyper-V. It is also available in Windows 7 as a role administration tool and is included with Microsoft Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT).

Hyper-V Manager is simpler to use than the System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), which is not free, can be complicated to use and requires a SQL Server deployment. In contrast, an administrator in a small to mid-size business can easily manage a local Hyper-V host and a limited number of remote hosts with Hyper-V Manager. If it is installed on a client computer, Hyper-V Manager allows the user to manage a VM running on the host server. It can also be used to install a guest operating system (OS), and install or upgrade services that improve integration between a physical computer and the VM.

In Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, users can provide alternate credentials when connecting to a remote computer from Hyper-V Manager and can connect to a remote computer using the IP address. Hyper-V Manager in Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 also allows administrators to manage computers running Hyper-V on Windows Server 8 and 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2.

Quote of the Day

"Although Hyper-V has evolved considerably since its initial release in Windows Server 2008, the Hyper-V Manager still looks and behaves in much the same way that it did in its first release." - Brien Posey

Use the Systeminfo.exe and Coreinfo.exe tools to see if your hardware components meet the Hyper-V requirements for the product and its features.

Use a performance counter to detect Hyper-V bottlenecks
Find the root cause of Hyper-V bottlenecks by using the specific performance counter for each resource: network, storage, CPU and memory.

Hyper-V 2016 features support shared storage alternatives
Hyper-V 2016 provides organizations with many storage options, including file-based and block-based storage, to achieve workload availability.

Top 10 Microsoft Hyper-V tools to consider
The HV remote tool boils down remote management for Microsoft Hyper-V into just a few commands. It can't get much simpler than that and that makes it part of our top Hyper-V tool list.
