A huddle room is a small and private meeting area that typically seats 3-6 people and is equipped with teleconferencing or other collaboration technologies. To huddle means to gather in a close-packed group or hold a consultation. Depending on its size and needs, an office may have several huddle rooms in addition to a large, conventional conference room. The rooms provide private spaces that are much more conducive to small-group collaboration than a large conference room, which in many offices is often divided by thin partitions and shared by multiple groups meeting simultaneously. In addition to being quieter, the more intimate space tends to ensure that all meeting attendees remain engaged. Huddle rooms are also useful for conducting 1-1 meetings private meetings, and in office spaces with open floor plans, may be the only place where such meetings can take place. In a large office space, smaller rooms can take advantage of space that is too awkward to serve any other useful purpose and be multi-purpose, for example providing office space for mobile workers and telecommuters who are only occasionally on the premises, while remaining available for everyone at other times. While the small meeting space can be used to restrict the number of meeting attendees to those individuals who need to be there, the technology in a huddle room permits the group to be expanded virtually by linking multiple meeting spaces, either onsite or at a different location. Generally, the focus of the technology is to make it as easy as possible for a mobile workforce to connect wirelessly using a variety of computing devices. A number of vendors offer products designed specifically for the huddle room market. For example, video conferencing provider Lifesize Inc. offers the Icon 450, a high-definition camera and phone system geared for small meeting rooms. In conjunction with Lifesize's cloud-based video communication platform, the system uses a smart-framing sensor that automatically adjusts the camera to capture everyone in the picture. Polycom Inc. offers the RealPresenceTrio, which combines video, audio and content-sharing capabilities, accessible from a smartphone or laptop. Other vendors of huddle room equipment include Highfive, Blue Jeans Network and Tely. |
