Managing supply chains and order flow from disparate vendors in today's market environment is not just another evolution of previous technology platforms. Leveraging IoT for order flow and supply chain management requires new ways of thinking and new kinds of software platforms to take full advantage of the opportunities that IoT and Advanced Analytics brings to bear. There is the potential to move from a reactive "fire-fighting" model to a pro-active stance based on continuous predictions and action based on real-time analytics. But doing so does require careful consideration.

Today's real-time business environment brings in a number of novel considerations:

  • The flow of data is continuous and so needs to be analyzed in real-time
  • Unstructured data – well beyond simple transactions – are much more common – especially with the growing adoption of IoT
  • Connected assets and products/goods themselves often have a both a "digital voice" and participate in business processes in IoT – very different from traditional supply chain processes
