The Three Ways

The Three Ways is a set of business principles for building a positive corporate culture in which:

1. Feedback loops are short, so mistakes get fixed early and are not repeated.

2. Everyone understands how different parts of the business interrelate.

3. All employees are encouraged to seek knowledge that will help the company meet its business goals.

The Three Ways was first introduced in a popular business/IT book called The Phoenix Project. The book's narrative story line uses relatable characters to show the reader that bad things can happen when product owners, software developers, IT operations, quality assurance and InfoSec teams fail to work together as a cohesive unit.

In the book, the concept of the Three Ways is introduced incrementally by a mysterious all-knowing character named Erik Reid. As each Way is revealed, the characters in the book begin to build a culture in which people, process and technology are aligned and working towards the same goal -- providing value to customers.

IT Revolution, the book's publisher, provides a more in-depth look at The Three Ways and explains how the principles can be used to create best practices in an accompanying reference manual called The DevOps Handbook. Continue reading...
