Digital transformation (DX) is the strategic use of technology and automation to dramatically change how businesses keep pace with changing customer expectations and economic conditions.

The sea change that started in the late 20th century when the internet became part of every household has spurred organizations today to transform much more rapidly, much more often and at a much faster pace today in response to widespread advancements in mobile technology, artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

 

One example of a company that has undergone successful digital transformation is Nespresso, a maker of specialty coffee machines. In response to changing customer demands, this operating unit of the Switzerland-based Nestle Group deployed a cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) system which provided customers with omnichannel access to both shopping and customer service. The resulting 360-degree view of each customer gave the company the insight it needed to move into more markets and improve sales.

 

Digital transformation requires leadership to foster an organizational culture in which continuous improvement is valued. This requires everyone in the organization to be aware of new technology trends and anticpate ways the resulting data can be used to provide value.
