application containerization

Application containerization is an approach to virtualization that allows multiple, isolated applications or services to run on a single host and share the same operating system (OS) kernel.

 

Proponents of containerization point to gains in efficiency for memory, CPU and storage, especially when compared to traditional virtualization or physical application hosting. Because there are no guest OS environment variables or library dependencies to manage, version control takes place at the image level and replaces configuration management at the system level. 

Containerization also offers security benefits because of the increased isolation of application packages and the use of specialized, lightweight OSes to run them. Policy can be used to dictate privilege levels for containers and make deployments even more secure. Continue reading...
