telecommuting

Telecommuting is the ability for an employee to complete work assignments from outside the traditional workplace by using telecommunications tools such as email, phone, chat and video apps.

 

The pervasive growth of the Internet, along with advancements in unified communications (UC), artificial intelligence and robotics has made it easier than ever for many work-related tasks to be performed remotely, outside the normal workplace.

 

According to a "Telecommuting Trend Data" report updated in August 2019, fifty percent of the U.S. workforce holds a job that is compatible with telework, and approximately 40% of the workforce has worked remotely at some point in time. Telecommuting during the pandemic

 

Companies across the country are shifting gears from accommodating short-term remote work strategies for expected occurences like snowstorms and hurricanes to helping workers remain productive long-term during an extended period of telecommuting.

 

While establishing best practices and policy for telework can't eliminate the disruptive risks of a pandemic or natural disaster, it can certainly mitigate them. Perhaps one of the most important best practices is to provide employees with the collaboration tools they'll need to get their work done.

 

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, quite a few IT vendors are offering telecommuting-related products either for free -- or for an extended trial period.
