Project Nightingale

Project Nightingale is a controversial partnership between Google and Ascension, the second largest health system in the United States. The partnership, which began in 2018, has provided Google with access to the medical records of over 50 million people.

 

Patents filed in 2018 show that Google hopes to combine Ascension's medical data with data from user behavior on the internet to create AI-enabled software tools that can proactively identify health concerns and predict outcomes.

 

The data Google gathers from medical patients includes the following:

  • patient names
  • patient birthdates
  • patient and family member addresses
  • lab results
  • diagnoses
  • hospitalization records
  • allergies
  • immunizations
  • medications
  • existing medical conditions
  • radiology scans

 

Project Nightingale is controversial because it allows Google to access data from Ascension healthcare facilities without patient consent or knowledge. Concerns have been raised about whether the partnership violates patient data privacy as defined by HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
