Desktop as a service (DaaS) is a cloud service in which the provider supplies the server hardware and network resources required to support a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployment. According to Market Watch, desktop as a service is expected to be a $4.7 billion market by 2022. Services are purchased through a subscription model based on the number of virtual desktop instances served per month. In the past, DaaS vendors were essentially infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers. The provider was responsible for maintaining the network resources and storage required to support a VDI deployment, and the customer was responsible for maintaining their own virtual desktop images, applications and security. Increasingly, however, vendors are referring to subscription models that simply provide backend support for a virtual desktop infrastructure deployment as cloud-hosted VDI -- and the label DaaS is reserved for premium subscriptions that include additional management and maintenance services. Popular DaaS offerings include: Amazon WorkSpaces - provides virtual Windows and Linux desktops to users on a variety of devices, including Windows PCs, Mac computers, Chromebooks and tablets. Citrix Managed Desktops - delivers Windows virtual desktops and applications. The service, which runs exclusively on Azure, supports both single-session and multi-session desktop delivery and provides access from any device with multi-factor authentication. VMware - offers both server-based and client-based virtual desktop services and packages them in a variety of ways under the Horizon Cloud umbrella. Windows Virtual Desktop - provides the necessary compute and storage resources to host desktop VMs on the Azure platform and delivers features such as diagnostics, advanced networking, connection brokering and gateway capabilities.
