| Word of the Day | | Daily updates on the latest technology terms | January 2, 2019 | | California Consumer Privacy Act | The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is legislation that gives California residents a way to control their personally identifiable information (PII) by ensuring the following rights: - The right to know what personal information is being collected about the resident.
- The right to know if personal information will be sold or disclosed and to whom.
- The right to say no to the sale of personal information.
- The right to access their personal information.
- The right to both equal service and price, even if they exercise their privacy rights.
CCPA, also known as Assembly Bill No. 375, was signed into law by the Governor of California on June 28, 2018. The law went into effect on January 1, 2020. CCPA Requirements The CCPA applies to any business that collects personal data, does business in the state of California and meets at least one of the following criteria: - Has annual gross revenues of twenty-five million dollars or more.
- Buys, receives, sells, or shares the personal information of 50,000 or more devices, consumers, or households for commercial purposes.
- Takes 50% or more of annual revenues from selling consumers' personal information.
