A release train engineer (RTE) is an information technology (IT) professional in a large enterprise who drives continuous development initiatives while also acting as a full time chief scrum master for a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).  SAFe is an online, freely available knowledge base of proven success patterns for implementing Lean-Agile software and systems at enterprise scale.

 

In the SAFe framework, a release train is a self-organizing team made up of 5-10 permanent Lean-Agile teams from various parts of the organization. The release train engineer's job is to facilitate how the teams plan, commit and execute work together.

A release train engineer has the following responsibilities:

  • Teach Agile team members and business owners about the value of combining Lean and Agile management practices and ideologies.
  • Coach business owners and team members in using Lean-Agile practices.
  • Maintain positive employee and team experiences by providing technical and business guidance to team members.
  • Create and communicate calendars for Program Increments (PIs) to ensure goals are met on time.
  • Monitor and report on the success of Agile release train (ART) initiatives.
