edge virtualization

Edge virtualization is the practice of decoupling software from hardware on devices located at the perimeter of the network to improve Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint management and reduce the number of single-purpose edge devices.

Here is an example of how edge virtualiztion might help network administrators at an imaginary retail store called Acme:

Acme Retail has several locations and every point of sale (POS) terminal at each location runs its own hardware, operating system and POS software application. Essentially, each POS terminal at Acme Retail is an expensive, stand-alone computer that can only run one program.

If the software on Acme's terminals is uncoupled from its underlying hardware, however, each POS terminal will be able to host multiple virtual machines (VMs).

This capability is important because it will allow the same terminal to be used for multiple purposes. For example, each POS terminal could also be used for inventory management.

In addition to helping administrators use IoT endpoint devices more efficiently, using virtualization at the network's edge can also help improve endpoint response times by bringing compute resources closer to where data is created. Continue reading about edge virtualization...

Today's Takeaway

"Edge virtualization has a different scale to the cloud.? Where the cloud has massive compute, storage and networking resources that are tightly geographically associated, usually in one or two very large data centers -- edge virtualization has a very large number of locations, each with a modest complement of resources."

-- Brian Buggy

Buzzword Alert

edge computing

The IT market has seen increased interest in edge computing, and virtualization vendors are building products to satisfy admins' growing edge virtualization needs.

virtualization tools

Edge virtualization is the latest data center equipment trend, and several vendors have developed virtualization tools to help organizations maximize infrastructure use.

asset management

As computing resources move out of the data center and into the network's periphery, asset and application management are becoming increasingly difficult, especially because much of it is carried out remotely.
