Ansible

Ansible is an open source configuration management (CM) and network automation platform, provided by Red Hat.

Ansible replaces ad hoc scripting and manual configuration with human-readable YAML templates called playbooks. Each playbook provides instructions for what needs to be done in order to bring a managed node into a desired state.

Ansible is agentless, which means that it does not install software on the nodes that it manages. When an Ansible control node connects to client and server nodes on a network, the control node sends a small program called an Ansible module to the managed nodes. Ansible executes the module over SSH and removes it when finished.

Ansible is part of Red Hat's systems management product group for enterprise IT. This group comprises Satellite infrastructure management, CloudForms cloud management and the Red Hat Insights monitoring and troubleshooting service. Continue reading about Ansible...

Today's Takeaway

"An Ansible playbook is a self-contained and organized collection of automation scripts, called plays, that define the configuration management work Ansible is set to perform on one or multiple machines...Once you're familiar with Ansible commands, you can write playbooks from scratch or pull in pre-written roles and modules from Ansible and its user community." -- Stuart Burns

Buzzword Alert

network automation

Ansible is a good system to start exploring network automation. It's easy to learn and provides valuable functionality. However, certain Ansible limitations mean it isn't suitable for all network automation tasks.

Ansible Tower

Ansible can feel a bit intimidating to IT admins who aren't intimate with command-line tools. Ansible Tower aims to address this concern with a graphical user interface.

Microsoft Windows

Most admins think LInux when considering Ansible for DevOps, but the configuration management automation tool also works for Windows.

IBM mainframe
Since IBM closed its $34 billion acquisition of Red Hat last July, it has blended open source tools from its new subsidiary into its own product line, including support for Red Hat OpenShift on the Z mainframe which became available last month.
