DataOps

DataOps (data operations) is a business strategy that seeks to ensure an organization's data can be used in the most flexible, effective manner possible in order to achieve positive business outcomes.

Like the DevOps movement that broke down silos between software development and operations teams, the DataOps movement focuses on people as well as processes and software tools. It emphasizes communication and collaboration and its adoption is intended to foster a culture of continuous improvement supported by best practices.

DataOps grew out of a need for businesses to provide internal support for data governance and data-driven business projects. An important goal of the DataOps movement is to accelerate the speed with which data models are built, tested and deployed.

It's important for data engineers, data scientists and data analysts to have the ability to create data models and run tests with customer data in a way that complies with privacy regulations. Popular software tools associated with the DataOps movement include:

DataKitchen - can aggregate information from multiple sources and create a single, 360-degree view of relevant information.

Composable - provides a full-stack analytics platform with built-in services for data orchestration and automation.

Delphix - automates the provisioning of high-quality data sets by compressing source data, creating virtual copies and making them available to all stakeholders.

Infoworks DataFoundry - provides a no-code environment for configuring the ingestion of data from a wide variety of sources.

Kafka - receives data from disparate source systems and makes the data available to target systems in real time. Continue reading about DataOps...

Today's Takeaway

"Data, measured in petabytes across the enterprise, the cloud and third-party sources, has the potential to be one of every company's most valuable resources. The Agile approach of DataOps, turbocharged by a powerful new generation of data management platforms and tools, is flipping the script on who gets to benefit most from data." -- Susan Cook
