tabletop exercise

A tabletop exercise (TTX) is an emergency preparedness activity in which selected personnel with high-level roles meet and discuss how to deal with a specific type of crisis.

Tabletop exercises are a cost-effective way to focus discussion and proactively evaluate plans for incident response and disaster recovery. Ideally, each TTX addresses the entire scope of a hypothetical scenario within an allotted time-span of a few hours.

Tabletop exercises allow key personnel to become more comfortable with their personal roles in a crisis scenario. They also help participants gain a better understanding of how each person's role contributes to the overall success of the organization's response.

Tabletop discussions are led by a designated facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for sharing a hypothetical scenario modeled after real life. During the exercise, they ask guided questions to keep participants on task, manage time and lead a retrospective at the conclusion of the exercise.

Lessons learned from a tabletop exercise can be used to identify gaps in the crisis management process, so they can be addressed before plans actually have to be put into action. Continue reading about TTX...

Today's Takeaway

"Perhaps the most effective way to test a pandemic recovery plan is through tabletop exercises. Tabletop exercises enable an organization to run through every aspect of the plan, step by step, and discover any potential weaknesses or missing information." - Paul Kirvan
