application service provider (ASP)

An application service provider (ASP) is a company that offers individuals or enterprises access to specialized software programs and related support services over the internet. Essentially, the ASP delivery model requires the customer to purchase the software and then pay a provider to host it.

ASPs use a single-tenant architecture and software clients have to be installed on the end users' computers. Once referred to as "apps-on-tap," ASP services became popular around the turn of the century.

Today, the ASP delivery model has largely been replaced by the software as a service (SaaS) delivery model. SaaS uses a multi-tenant architecture and customers access applications through a web browser.
